Updated April 2026 · Diesel Automotive workshop notes
You've topped up the AdBlue. The warning is still on. There's a countdown ticking — 1,500 miles, 1,200, 800. If it hits zero, the engine won't restart. Here's what's actually going on and what to do about it.
EU emissions law requires SCR-equipped diesels to enter "no-restart" mode if the AdBlue system isn't working properly. Once the warning escalates to a countdown, you have the displayed mileage to fix the underlying fault before the engine refuses to start. It's deliberate — and it can't be ignored.
NOx sensor failure. The most frequent culprit. NOx sensors degrade with age and contamination. Most cars have two — upstream and downstream of the SCR cat. From £249 fitted per sensor.
AdBlue pump failure. Common on Mercedes OM651 / OM642 (C, E, GLA, Sprinter), where the pump sits in a vulnerable spot. From £349 fitted.
AdBlue heater failure. Cars left to stand in winter often suffer crystallised AdBlue and a failed heater. Heater replacement varies by platform — quote on request.
Injector blockage. AdBlue crystallises easily; a blocked injector stops the system dosing properly. Sometimes cleaning works; often replacement is the right call.
Level sensor / quality sensor faults. The car can think the tank is empty when it's full, or that the AdBlue is the wrong concentration. Sensor replacement clears the fault.
We diagnose the system using manufacturer-level tools — read fault codes, monitor live data (NOx readings, pump pressure, dosing rate, heater current draw), and inspect the physical parts. The diagnostic is £59 and comes off the bill if you proceed.
Once the underlying fault is fixed, we clear the countdown and confirm the system is dosing correctly.
We don't delete AdBlue systems. It's illegal under UK emissions law, an automatic MOT failure, voids your insurance, and devalues the car. If a competitor offers it, that's their problem.
Got a countdown running? Don't wait for it to hit zero — it's much cheaper to fix the fault now than to fix it once the car won't start. AdBlue repair page · Contact.
Send your reg, mileage countdown and any fault codes — we'll diagnose properly.
