Clutch only vs clutch and flywheel

On many modern diesels, the dual mass flywheel (DMF) wears out alongside the clutch. We inspect each one — checking for excessive rotational free play, heat damage and noise. If the DMF is worn, we strongly recommend replacing it at the same time, because it's a labour-heavy job to do twice. If it's healthy, we leave it. We never sell you parts you don't need.

Frequently asked questions

The engine revs rise but the car doesn't accelerate at the same rate, especially uphill or in higher gears. There's often a burning smell after hard pulls, and the biting point may be very high.

Not always. We inspect the DMF for rotational play, heat damage and noise. If it's worn, we recommend replacement at the same time because re-doing the job later is expensive labour. If it's healthy, we leave it.

A flywheel built in two halves with internal springs that absorb engine vibration before it reaches the gearbox. Common on diesels. They wear out over time and can cause rattle on idle, judder on take-off, and gear selection problems.
