Signs your timing chain may need replacing

If your car is doing two or more of those, get it looked at. Driving on a stretched chain risks it jumping teeth or snapping — and on an interference engine that means bent valves and a much bigger bill.

Why timing chain jobs are not simple

Many modern diesel chains are at the rear of the engine — between the engine and the gearbox. To get to them, the engine, gearbox or both have to come out. Some V6 engines have multiple chains. Some require special tools to lock the camshafts and tension the new chain to spec.

This is specialist mechanical work — not a quick belt swap. We've done hundreds of them. We do them with manufacturer-correct procedure, manufacturer-spec parts, and a written quote up front.

Common engines we see

BMW

N47, N57, B47 — chain at the rear of the engine, gearbox-out job.

Mercedes-Benz

OM651 (C, E, Sprinter), OM642 V6.

VW / Audi

2.0 TDI common rail, 3.0 TDI V6 (chain at rear).

Ford

EcoBoost (1.0/1.6 wet belt converted to chain on later spec) and TDCi where applicable.

Vauxhall

1.6 / 2.0 CDTi chain engines.

Vans

Transit, Sprinter OM651, VW Crafter, Vauxhall Vivaro chain platforms.

Some engines are known for timing chain wear or timing-related faults. We diagnose before quoting. Diagnose first

Not every rattle is the timing chain. Before we strip the front cover off, we rule out:

Frequently asked questions

The clearest signs are a metallic rattle on cold start that fades after a few seconds, cam/crank correlation fault codes (P0016–P0019 family), rough running and chain stretch readings on live data. We confirm with diagnostic data and a physical inspection before quoting.

Not for long. A stretched chain can jump teeth or snap. On an interference engine that means bent valves, damaged pistons and a much larger repair bill — often a cylinder head overhaul or full engine rebuild.

It can be, mainly because of labour. On engines where the chain sits at the rear (BMW N47/N57, Mercedes OM651, VAG V6) the gearbox or engine has to come out. Send your reg and we'll come back with a written quote.

No. Cambelts are rubber and replaced on a fixed time / mileage interval. Chains are metal and replaced on symptoms or diagnostic data. Both keep the camshafts in time with the crankshaft, but the work is very different.

Yes. BMW N47, N57 and B47 chain replacements are routine work for us. Because the chain is at the back of the engine, the gearbox has to come out, but we do these jobs regularly.

Yes. Sprinter OM651/OM642, Transit, Crafter and Vivaro timing chain jobs are routine for us.

Two to four working days for most engines. We give you a realistic timeline with the written quote and keep you updated if anything shifts.
