Why is my diesel smoking black, blue or white?

Updated April 2026 · Diesel Automotive workshop notes

Smoke colour gives you a strong clue about what's wrong. Use this as a starting point — but always get it diagnosed properly before paying for the wrong repair.

Black smoke — fuelling, EGR, turbo

Black smoke is unburnt diesel — too much fuel, not enough air, or both.

Blue smoke — burning oil

Blue smoke means engine oil is getting where it shouldn't.

If oil consumption is over 1 litre per 1,000 miles, it's beyond a top-up — get it checked.

White smoke — coolant or unburnt fuel

White smoke that smells sweet usually means coolant in the combustion chamber. White smoke that smells of unburnt diesel usually means the engine isn't lighting properly.

What to do next

Note when the smoke happens (cold start, full revs, idle), how long it lasts, and the colour. Photos or short videos help. Send those plus your reg, and we'll come back with a likely cause and a diagnostic plan. Diagnostics from £59, off the bill if you proceed.
